With the 2025 equine breeding season wrapping up, it is never too early to start planning for those 2026 crosses. As a horse owner, finding the perfect stud to compliment your mare can be a very arduous and overwhelming process, which is something studbook.com creator Jessie Jo Johnson has experienced firsthand.
“I had a mare that got hurt and I needed to breed her, so I put the famous, ‘Here’s my mare, what’s out there for studs?’ post on Facebook and I was just totally overwhelmed by all the responses. There was just no way to streamline all the information I was getting,” Johnson reflected.
A lifelong horse owner with a background in multi-media, Johnson’s stud searching experience got her to think there may be other mare owners that struggle to sift through and find the perfect stud cross for their mare. She was struck by the idea of creating studbooks.com, an online stallion directory.
“It’s like Autotrader for studs,” Johnson said while describing the website.
Working as a one-stop-shop website, studbooks.com is open to all breeds and with built-in search filters, so mare owners can sort information to narrow down and find exactly the kind of stud they want to breed their mare to.
“We have an interactive map so you can type in your zip code and find studs that are local to you, or you can go through our advanced search and look more specifically for things like breed, genetic testing or what kind of coverage options the stud offers,” Johnson added.
Conveniently, the website also allows mare owners to save stallion profiles in their favorites queue for easier access later. And the best part, it is free for mare owners to create an account and begin searching.
The website offers several perks for stud owners, as well.
“It can eliminate the need to have a website for your stud if you don’t want to have to deal with monthly fees and maintenance or you can use studbooks.com to compliment an already existing website,” Johnson said.
The breeding side of the horse business is booming right now. With a futurity eligible rope horse recently selling for $1.7 million, equine enthusiasts are eager to raise their own could-be champions. As a stud owner, publicity is key to getting your stud in front of mare owners, but competition is fierce within that market space and the labyrinth that is a Google search can bury individual stud websites. A highly trafficked, conglomerate website like Studbooks triggers algorithms and auto-populates towards the top of Google searches.
With website building and maintenance easily adding up to thousands of dollars per year, Studbooks presents as an economical option for stud owners. Profile packages begin at $150 per year with the option to create and easily manage profiles for multiple stallions if need be. Stallion profiles allow owners to upload pictures, videos, pedigrees, as well as breeding and contact information. Additionally, Studbooks has a presence across social media, which offers additional marketing exposure.
“The whole idea is to give stud owners a platform to market their horses, so they don’t have to be stuck at the computer, struggling with a website or struggling with social media. This website just streamlines it and keeps it easy,” Johnson articulated.
Studbooks.com has been in existence for a year and as it continues to grow, more advanced search options will be made available. In the meantime, the website provides a much-needed service for a rapidly growing industry.
